Belarus isn't obviously the promised land of modern extreme metal, and as most of the blackened metal bands from the eastern Europe seem to be somehow connected with the controversial NSBM-scene, Infestum seems to be truly something different.
"Ta Natas" is basically just your average black metal album, spiced with some synths and heavily distorted vocals. The sound isexcellent and there's nothing bad about the songwriting skills. The songs vary from ferocious blasting to atmospheric soundscapes, and even some rocking riffs can be seldomly heard. If you ask me to compare Infestum to some other bands, I can't really give you any names. Infestum really do have the sound of their own, mostly because of the hysterical vocals of Ion The Saint.
Infestum really suprised me. This band has everything that a good band needs, but the question still remains: can the right audience find this band? It's all about the good luck and successful promotion now, because if the band is able to improve their music into something even more unique, they'll be at prominent position in the metal scene very soon. Infestum are a Belarus melodic pagan black metal horde and this «Ta Natas» is their second full-length (the first one «Last Day Before the Endless Night» being released through More Hate some three years ago). First of all, don’t let me scare you with the fashion-able melodic black metal description, «Ta Natas» shows a band tapping in on chaotic yet majestic black music. The melodic / symphonic side of the band mainly comes from the (background) keyboards lines and don’t really undermine the band’s aggressive potential. There are some noticeable influences encountered here and there but on the whole, Infestum have a sound entirely of their own, which the multi-structured and almost experimental «Legion In Me» or «Ta Natas» clearly testify (especially thanks to ‘Ion The Saint’s special vocal work). Eventually, I get the feeling that those Belarus musicians create a very nice uncompromising (always a good criteria when you speak about black metal) melodic albeit chaotic black metal album. Very nice release.

Mit ihrer neuesten Scheibe „Ta Natas“ - uber die ma?ig grandiose Namensgebung sollte man am besten hinweg schauen- hauen Infestum voll auf die Zwolf. Die funf Jungs stammen aus Minsk, Wei?russland. Sie machen keinen Hehl daraus, dass sie nicht versuchen wie andere Black Metal Bands den „good old times“ hinterher zu laufen, sondern bezeichnen ihre Musik als „second wave of black metal“ und genauso klingt sie auch. Empfangen wird man an der Eingangstur mit dem Intro 'To the Master of Life' und zarten, sich abwechselnden Frauen- und Mannerchoren. Doch gleich darauf folgt schon der Ernst der Sache in Form von 'Te Deum'; Sanger Ion The Saint schleudert giftige Vocals um sich und bildet einen interessanten Kontrast zu den hubschen Hintergrundmelodien. Das folgende 'Masquerade' ist das erste von funf in Russisch gehaltenen Stucken,die fremdlandischen Lyrics geben dem Ganzen einen diabolischen Charakter und tauchen die musikalische Landschaft, die Infestum aufspannen, in ein mystisches Zwielicht. 'Legion In Me' geht wesentlich ruhiger zu Werke, das treibende Riffing bereitet den Untergrund fur den kranken und hasserfullten Gesang. 'On Wings Of Darkness' mutet sehr melodisch an und bewegt sich ebenfalls in eher langsameren Gefilden, was den Synthie-Lines die Chance einraumt, sich auch zu Wort zu melden. 'Razor On Throat' fahrt noch einen Gang runter, sehr basslastig wirkt es fast schon ein wenig experimentell. Der nachste Track auf der Scheibe ist 'Dark Passage' ein instrumentales Stuck, welches sehr doomig und kalt daher kommt und mein auditives Gedachtnis zum Ende hin an Peitschenhiebe erinnert. Zu guterletzt das Titelstuck 'Ta Natas', bei dem Schreihals Ion nochmal richtig aufdreht und gen Ende wieder von den Choren – die den Hohrer zu Anfang begru?ten- abgelost wird. Das Stuck geht uber in einlullende nautische Klange, um sich dann doch noch in aller Form mit der groben Kelle zu verabschieden. Eine schone Produktion, die ordentlich knuppelt aber trotzdem nicht primitiv daher kommt.

Black Metal from Belarus (White Russia) – this alone should raise attention and have you check out the band. Infestum was formed in June of 2000 by ex-members of the group Midgard and consists now of Skald (guitar), Ion (voc), Thorngrim (bass, synth), Burglar (dr) and the new additional guitar player Avesh. Their style followed from the very start rather the second wave of black metal, lyrical themes focused – as to be expected - on the personification of the darkest parts of the human subconsciousness. And this is the case also with their second record, where the virtuosity alone has Infestum stick out of the mass of releases. Brutality and blast-beats alternate with epic-melodic parts, and still it seems to be a successful whole. The groove of some tracks even has ear candy qualities (e. g. Legion In Me, Tem, Kto...), and Ion?s voice is as evil as Shagrath?s. Moreover, the cover artwork by Valdmar Smerdulak is excellent – thumbs up!

Diese wei?russische Formation bietet auf ihrer dritten Veroffentlichung rauen Black Metal mit leichter Industrial-Schlagseite. Kalt klirrende Riff-Salven und derb verzerrte Vocals bestimmen das Bild, untermalt von treibenden Drums und reichlich Keyboard-Einsatz, wobei sich die Tasten nie in den Vordergrund drangeln. Dabei bewegen sich INFESTUM auf einem hohen technisch hohen Niveau und arbeiten mit durchdachten Songstrukturen - nie zu simpel, nie zu komplex. Erinnert vom Feeling her entfernt an SATYRICON's "Rebel Extravaganza"-Phase. Leider bleibt der Gesang durchgehend verzerrt und was anfangs richtig schon fies bestialisch ruberkommt, wirkt auf Dauer dann doch ein wenig eintonig. Etwas mehr Abwechslung in diesem Bereich, hatte dem Album sicher nicht geschadet. Dennoch eine wirklich ordentliche Scheibe, die Anhanger von moderneren Black Metal-Klangen durchaus mal antesten sollten.

Het uit het verre Minsk, Wit-Rusland, afkomstige Infestum neemt zichzelf absoluut erg serieus. Inclusief zonnebril kijken de vier heren vanaf het cd-boekje wel erg stoer richting lens en ook het poseren in bijgevoegde clip op dit album is wars van enige vorm van zelfspot. Eens kijken of we dit gezelschap ook zo serieus moeten nemen als ze zelf doen voorkomen.
De band speelt Slavische black metal met een chaotisch randje, aangevuld met een redelijke dosis aan toetsen. Het chaotische zit 'm in dit geval vooral in de vervormde, krakende vocalen van het heerschap Ion the Saint in combinatie met de behoorlijk rauwe productie, want muzikaal is het eerder rechtlijnig dan chaotisch te noemen. De black metal kent vele tempowisselingen, maar is vooral qua gitaarwerk vrij standaard. Daarbij komen er regelmatig behoorlijk aanwezige toetsenpartijen om de hoek kijken, welke soms geslaagd, soms wat minder toepasselijk zijn ingepast. De band probeert, wat dit toetsenwerk betreft, duidelijk ook de vroege periode van grootmeesters in het genre Emperor te eren, overigens zonder ze ook maar enigszins kwalitatief te benaderen.
Maar elke band in dit genre met Emperor vergelijken zou natuurlijk niet eerlijk zijn. Dan zou je immers negentig procent van alle bands met de grond gelijk moeten maken. Nee, want er staan ook wel degelijk een aantal sterke nummers op dit Ta Natas. Neem het aanstekelijke Legion in Me, het vrij lange I'll Close My Eyes (met sfeervol gitaar-outro, inclusief gaaf geprogrammeerde drumpartijen) en het goeie, afwisselende For Those Who...
Dus moeten we deze heren nou serieus nemen, ja of nee?? Aan de ene kant dus wel, want ze hebben immers een paar redelijk sterke nummers weten te schrijven. Daarbij ziet het artwork er verzorgd en professioneel uit. Aan de andere kant moet ik zeggen dat ik over het geheel gezien niet echt onder de indruk ben geraakt van dit viertal Wit-Russen. En als ik de clip van het titelnummer bekijk, kan ik m'n lach soms maar moeilijk onderdrukken als de bandleden nogal geforceerd "evil" proberen te poseren voor de camera. Een halfslachtig gevoel dus, maar toch geef ik ze het voordeel van de twijfel. Omdat ik in zo'n goede bui ben...

Infestum stammen aus Wei?russland und auf dem Album steht als Titel “Ta Natas”. Das macht zusammen zwei Grunde, warum mich Skepsis befallt, noch bevor der Laser die glatte Oberflache streichelt.
“Ta Natas” - also bitte. Wahnsinnig einfallsreich. Das behabige Intro lasst zunachst noch genug Zeit, uber Sinn oder Unsinn zu sinnieren, doch bald wird zugiger BM sich meiner Aufmerksamkeit bemachtigen. Uber allem ergreift wohl in erster Linie mal der derb giftige Gesang vom Ohr Besitz. Mit digitaler Hormonspritze aufgepeppt, sicher, aber ziemlich abgefahren.
Zuachst scheint man sich im Hause Infestum nicht mit Feinheiten aufzuhalten: Schnelligkeit regiert und ein Potpourri aus wirren Instrumentenstrangen will durchlauscht werden. Melodie ist hier kaum wichtigstes Kaufargument, denn die ist hier meist nur Zierrat auf der Zuckertorte. Die Energie, die “Ta Natas” aus der Produktion bezieht, besticht weit mehr: hier kommen mir Drums und Bass mit einem sonoren Sound und rhythmischen Druck entgegen geflattert, dass ich schon meinte, ich sei einer Drum-and-Bass-Combo aufgesessen oder in ein brutales Techno-Metal-Mischmasch reingeraten. Erwahnenswert sind auch die choralen Momente, die nicht einfach nur lustlos dazwischen geworfen sind. Ihr Hauch von Epos und Gro?e durchzieht zwar nicht das gesamte Album, erfreut aber dort, wo er eingesetzt wird als krasser Gegensatz zum schnellern BM das Gemut.
Irgendwie hort man der Band an, dass sie sich von ihrem Beginn an stets als “die zweite Generation” BM sah, statt auf Biegen und Brechen old school zu beschworen. Und das zahlt sich aus, denn, auch wenn ich nicht wei?, wo die Gruppe her kommt, zeigt “Ta Natas” doch, wo sie heute angekommen ist: an einem eigenen, individuellen Platzchen auf einem hei? umkampften Schlachtfeld. Und auch, wenn man herauszuhoren meint, dass sich der ein oder andere Saitenakrobat hier und da mal leicht vergriffen habe, bleibt “Ta Natas” doch ein unterhaltsames und auch heftiges Album, das m. E. nette Ideen und vorzuglichen Sound aufweisen kann.

Infestum have really changed their appearance over the past few years, and the sound is a bit different too. Much less hair, and black metal that is a bit less straight forward. Also much more noticeable is the lack of the pagan look and atmosphere and insertion of more a of a suited, post-black look. Also noticeable on their official MySpace is in the influences section after a short list of second-wave black metal bands, it is said "Also listen experimental, electronic, industrial and pop :)" I can understand everything until he got to the word pop, but since that three letter word could mean a giant number of things, I'm just going to ignore the fact that it was even said. Some elitist journalists might bitch about the smiley face as well, but come on...even the grimmest forest dwellers will use an emoticon once in a while.
Infestum was formed in the summer of 2000 from the ashes of Midgard, of which I'm not sure of anything about. I have been told it was a German band with three guitarists but it can't be confirmed. The early days of Infestum found them primarily searching for the animal in all of us, to bring about animalistic urges and to follow those instincts to the bone. It was through this that the demo was quoted as being similar in style to Bathory and Graveland. After this and a number of live gigs Grond was replaced by Burglar (ex-Morbid Victory). It was that winter that saw the recording of their first full length album Last Day Before the Endless Night on More Hate Productions, and subsequently it was released that following December in 2002. Now Infestus finds them self in new territory by leaving behind their old gauntlets and chainmail with their pagan views and lyrical themes, and instead pick up a more experimental style of lyricism, though maintaining their initial attempt at a more raw appeal in sound.
So what about the music? Don't worry, it doesn't show influences of "electronic, industrial and pop :)," at least not yet anyway. The new album is still certainly black metal but with a very light keyboard atmosphere in the background at times and a strong choir intro. It’s very similar to a much more well produced Lunar Aurroa meets newer Mayhem or Gorgoroth. It’s not nearly as "post-black" or experimental as one might be led to believe it is from the album artwork, but it certainly gets the job done. This isn't necessarily going to be one of the best releases of this year unfortunately because these guys do seem to have a great deal of potential and ability, but it’s a damn good album. I'd keep my eyes out for their return release, its most likely going to be ground-breaking for them.

Na, gibt es noch Schwarzwurzelkauer, die abends in ihre schwarzen Kissen weinen, weil DIMMU BORGIR nicht mehr wie zu Zeiten von "Stormblast" klingen? Der wahre Black Metal mit einer kleinen Menge von Keyboards, einer schwarzkeifenden Stimme und einer unbarmherzigen Trommelmaschine, uber die einfach geniale Melodien gewetzt werden, die einen auf die Knie gehen lassen? Nun, ihr konnt ruhig weiterweinen. Oder euch aber damit trosten, dass zumindest der Geist von "Stormblast" weiterlebt. Neustes Beispiel: INFESTUM mit "Ta Natas"
An sich ist alles schon in der Uberschrift gesagt, aber hier noch mal langsam: In gro?er Bandbreite was Geschwindigkeit, Instrumentalisierung und Melodien anbetrifft, gehen INFESTUM mit brutal keifender Stimme gegen alles vor, was christlich ist. Die Reminiszenz zu DIMMU BORGIR ist neben der Brutalitat und den Riffs auch den kleinen orchestralen Passagen zu verdanken, die hier noch duster und roh wirken. Fur die dunklen Lyrics wird gern die Sprache aus dem Heimatland der Band genommen, Wei?russland. Das einzige Problem, das sich daraus ergibt, ist, dass die Lyrics im Booklet, wenn sie mal nicht englisch sind, leider unlesbar durch die Schriftform gemacht werden.
Die Platte ist ohne Zweifel ein Mosher vor dem Herren, hasserfullt, melodisch und trotzdem brutal. Wer sich mit der Abkehr DIMMU BORGIRs von der einzig wahren schwarzen Lehre immer noch nicht abgefunden hat, wird mit diesem "For All Tid"-Gedenken sicher seine Freude haben, aber auch der Black-Metal-Fan im Allgemeinen darf sich mit der CD etwas Gutes tun.

Als ich dieses Album zum ersten Mal horte, nervte mich gleich mal der standig verzerrte Gesang. Warum versucht jemand bose rumzukreischen, wenn er Hilfsmittel braucht, da? es so richtig fies klingt? Auch die Musik offenbarte sich mir nicht gleich, klang alles etwas merkwurdig...nun, der Gesang geht mir immer noch auf den Zeiger, aber musikalisch haben Infestum ein verdammt gutes Album abgeliefert, das sich jedoch erst nach einigen Durchlaufen langsam erschlie?t. Die Wei?russen spielen ganz klar Black Metal, folgen jedoch keiner Trueness-Formel, biedern sich nicht an kommerziell erfolgreiche Bands an und ziehen auch sonst einen ziemlich originellen und eigenwilligen Stiefel durch. Da trifft tiefschwarzes Geballer bester norwegischer Pragung auf Drumloops, tauchen plotzlich Chore und symphonische Keyboards auf, um dann wieder altem Osteuropa-Metal-Charme a la Tormentor oder Root Platz zu machen. Nein, einfache Kost ist das hier mit Sicherheit nicht. Wer im Black Metal ausschlie?lich die reine Teufelsschule gut findet, sollte von Infestum die Finger lassen, ebenso alle, die nicht auf Eingangigkeit verzichten konnen. Aber es ist gut zu sehen, da? es nach wie vor Bands gibt, die es schaffen, einen eigenen Stil zu kreieren, und auch das wird seine Anhanger fnden. Die Texte sind ubrigens teils auf englisch, teils auf russisch und werden im Booklet ausfuhrlich erklart. Black Metal-Fans: gebt Infestum eine Chance! Infestum: bitte nachstes Mal den Verzerrer am Mikro ausschalten und ansonsten ein weiteres tolles Album vorliegen! Spasiba.

dalsi fotografie Beloruska kapela Infestum z Minsku vznikla v roce 2000 a za tu dobu stihla vydat jedno EP a dve radova alba. Ja se s temito pagan black metalisty setkavam prvne a pocity mam spise rozporuplne.
Obal alba je paradni, skutecne nadherne udelany a tak jsem se tesil na poradnou atmosferickou naloz. Ta sice prisla, ale ponekud v jinem havu nez bych od Belorusu ocekaval. Ta Natas je podivnou smesku pagan black metalu s klavesovou hudbou ala Dimmu Borgir a s pridavkem jakesi snahy o industrial, nebo mozna techno. Tento mix by vubec nemusel byt spatny, ale mam pocit, ze ho kapela chytla za nespravny konec. Napriklad se hudba rozjede a rikate si, to je skutecne mazec a behem chvile kapela zazdi sama sebe naprosto neumelym prechodem nebo podivnou pasazi. Jsou zde ale momenty skutecne chytlave, na pagan black az neuveritelne a to monotonni plochy, ktere by jste u kolegu jako napriklad u Lotysskych Obtest tezko hledali.
Ovsem jsou zde dalsi veci, ktere mi dost vadi a to je napriklad zpev, ktery nema s black metalovym skrehotem nic spolecneho. Zpevak pouzil
pocitacovy efekt, ktery se posledni dobou velmi rozmaha, ale ti kdo ho pouzivaji, tak vetsinou jen na par sekund pro zvyrazneni pasaze, Infestum maji takhle zpraseny zpev na celem albu a ve vysledku je prave ten zpev asi nejslabsim clankem mozaiky.
Kdyz to ted po sobe ctu, asi bych nemel byt tak negativni, protoze album obsahuje dost originalnich napadu, ale chtely by prepracovat, znovu nahrat a zapracovat i na bicich. Rozhodne bych ale tuto kapelu nezatracoval, potencial se zda byt veliky, uz jen proto, ze pagan black, ac se tak oznacuji se jim v hudbe projevuje pouze jako zaklad, na kterem se stavi neco zajimavejsiho.

Ne en 2000 des cendres du groupe Midgard, Infestum a la particularite de nous venir d’une contree dont les productions parviennent rarement jusqu’a nous, a savoir la Bielorussie. Voyons donc ce qu’ils ont dans le ventre avec ce « Ta Natas », leur 2eme album.
Laissons de cote le clip du morceau « Ta Natas », bonus qui nous ramene aux delires black visuels des debuts du genre, les corpses paint en moins. Parlons donc de l’essentiel, a savoir des dix morceaux de black metal que nous offre Infestum… Dix morceaux qui en eux meme, sont tres bons, offrant des structures biens faites, des riffs efficaces, et des melodies soulignees par le synthe, ce qui nous fait du coup grandement penser a un croisement entre Dimmu Borgir et Emperor, de toute evidence les influences majeures de ce combo. Le chant est lui aussi tres bien pose, parfois en anglais et le plus generalement en russe, avec cependant des annotations en anglais sous chaque titre a l’interieur du livret. Il est question comme l’on pourrait s’en douter de satanisme, un satanisme assez proche de celui de LaVey avec un peu plus de mysticisme encore, histoire de garder un peu le folklore black metal si cher au style. Tout cela serait parfait s’il n’y avait pas une ombre au tableau : la production. La batterie bien trop triggee, ainsi que le synthe et le chant qui sont trop en avant dans le mix, laissant en retrait les guitares dont le son manque singulierement de relief et de puissance. Quand a la basse, on se demande bien souvent ou elle est cachee. Etrangement cela s’arrange au fil de l’album (meme si le son des guitares merite toujours un meilleur sort).
Infestum realise au final un bon album dont la production imparfaite n’est cependant pas un obstacle (ce n’est pas non plus catastrophique) et ce grace a des compositions tres biens faites qui seduiront sans mal les amateurs de black symphonique. Si vous n’avez toujours pas gaspille votre argent dans le (decevant) dernier Dimmu Borgir, « Ta natas » est un album qui en comparaison merite largement l’investissement.

Die Wei?russen INFESTUM spielen laut Labelinfo „Chaotic Black Metal“. Dem kann ich so ohne weitres zustimmen, wobei das „Chaotzic“ eher auf die schnelle und kompromisslose Spielweise hinweist als auf die chaotischen Strukturen.
Nach dem von Choren getragenen Intro geht es auch schon los. Der Opener von „Ta Natas“ (`Te Deum?) ist gleichzeitig das Highlight des Albums, da er relativ verstandliche Vocals bietet und eingangige, hangen bleibende Sounds verwendet. Rasende Gitarren, schnelle Drums und hasserfullte Vocals, die Satan preisen...das ist `Te Deum?. Im Mittelpart kommt kurz Verwirrung auf, da auf einmal alles leise ist und mann nur leise Bass-Parts hort, woraufhin der Sturm wieder losbricht.
Die Tracks drei bis acht schlagen in die gleiche Kerbe: mal wird rasend geknuppelt und mal in genauso hasserfullter Manier im Mid-Tempo gespielt. Die Vocals bleiben stets fies und keifend. Die Instrumentalfraktion zeigtb und zu ihr Konnen durch abwechslungsreiche Parts, au?erdem werden einige gute Melodien beigemischt.
Auf jeden Fall bieten INFESTUM auf „Ta Natas“ sehr guten, leicht melodischen Black Metal, der sich horen lassen kann. Ahnliche Bands waren Dark Fortress oder Naglfar, aber auch Valkyria. Reinhoren lohnt sich!

The Belarussian Infestum is theoretically a pagan black metal band since 2000. They gave the world to be destroyed an EP in 2001, then after two years their first LP came out. Reinforcement came this year with the title Ta Natas, about which you're reading right now (and which was actually recorded in 2005, and has been remastered). As far as aesthetics go the cover and booklet (made by the Russian Waldmahr Smerdulak) are very nice, they bring to mind the Polach Behemoth's sick world, and musically speaking I don't get the pagan sensation from it, more like simple black metal, though with a concept akin to paganism. The whole thing has a Diabolos Rising kind of taste to it, because of Ion the Saint's distorted croaking, and by the way the whole album pays tribute to Alyone Zimnitskaya, who I really don't know who was, but lived for 25 years, I fathom she was the musician's girlfriend. But anyway let's get back to these 50 minutes of music...
The aforementioned Behemoth-line doesn't appear only in the aesthetics department, but also in the musical field. The whole thing is saturated with a kind of apocalyptic atmosphere and noble classical musical background, which manifests itself in an industrial and noisy manner. A lot of mid-tempos and clear spaces, mechanic riffs and merciless grinding. The sound, as the aesthetics is of the best quality, the guitars are grainy as they should be, and musical professionalism is apparent everywhere. The themes are diverse and nicely manoeuvring between puritanic melodies and brutality, although the lyrics are more of an occult nature - or simply anti-christian, maybe satanist in contrast to preservation of the past and paganism. It's partly because of this that I don't understand the word 'pagan' in their genre, I didn't get any folkloristic vibes from their music either, though I'm not familiar with Belarusian culture. But I doubt it would be much different from those of Ukraine and Russia... Musically I wouldn't want to compare them to anyone, every formule of old and modern black metal are present in it, but only influences, no stolen stuff! The tracks that I would like to point out are Dark Passage, an instrumental ambient race, and finally the title-song Ta Natas, which I found, contrary to all the fine aesthetics, quite abhorrent along with its video (which is a bonus on the CD, sadly).
Though there are a few nice outdoor pictures and good ideas, these 'we're a buch of sun-glass wearing toughguys' things are quire infantile and more than ridiculous... If they'd have put only quarter as much into them as the booklet, I wouldn't have to close my critique full of disdain!
I read somewhere the description 'chaotic black metal', of course it's very marketable this way, and is just about accurate as pagan... The guys from Minsk are a little dubious, since contrary to the appearences they try to play pagan, the final product being complex and smart black metal, and behind all this is an awful video and pictures of the band. Maybe the problem is within me, but for me pagan black metal means viking and folk stuff, like.. nature, forests, falls, rivers, oldish clothings, mountains, torches... well of all these not much is present in Infestum. But anyhow, they sure can play, and if one forgets about these few concept-ruining segments, then the whole production is quite nice.

With a cover and intro track that reminded me of Cradle of Filth, I really wasn't expecting too much from this rather unknown symphonic black metal band from Belarus.
It wasn't long, however, before I was eating my words, yes they are still symphonic black metal, and yes they are from Belarus, but apart from the first track and artwork, there is nothing linking them to CoF, nor is there anything linking to the many terrible bands who look up to bands like CoF and Dimmu Borgir for inspiration.
No, this is good honest black metal that just so happens to utilise some synthesisers and programmed sounds in their music. In fact, maybe it is a little hasty for me to call them symphonic black metal, as I know this tars them with a brush many of the black metal hordes hate, and their sound isn't pure symphonic black metal, more like a cross between normal raw pagan black metal and symphonic black metal. As this was one of the first impressions I got after a couple of full listens, I will stick to my classification, but take it with a pinch of salt, I am no expert in black metal, but I know what I like, and I like this!
Now I quite like symphonic black metal, when it is done right. And it is my personal opinion that Infestum have hit the nail right on the head with this release, with the symphonic parts adding to the raw black metal sound, instead of drowning them out and diluting the overall sound.
When doing a bit of research about Infestum (I knew nothing about them before I received a copy of the CD to review) I noticed that they list bands like Satyricon, Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, and Immortal as their influences, which is interesting, because the first band that jumped out as an obvious influence would be Bathory.
The official release date of this album is tomorrow (28/09/07) I mention this not to gloat about getting an advanced copy early (hahaha, I got an advanced copy early) but because while I was looking through the booklet that accompanies the CD, I noticed that many of the songs were written in 2002 and 2003. My first thoughts were that maybe they had taken songs from older releases and put them onto this album, however when I looked through their website, I found that they have had 2 releases out prior to Ta Natas, one in 2002 and one in 2003, not one of those releases contained any songs from this new CD. If they didn't think the songs were good enough at the time, I would love to hear their older work, because to me the older songs sound just as good as their new output.
Musically I don't really know how to describe them, like I have said before, good black metal with hints of symphonic/electronic stuff, vocally they sound like pretty standard, nothing gothy or shit about the vocals, just good black metal harshness. You just need to listen to the first line of the second track on the album to know what the lyrical content is going to be about, ?I Pray to Satan?. I should point out that whilst some of the lyrics are in English, others are not, I assume they are written in Belarusian (google assures me this is a real word!!)
This is a good solid release from a band that will hopefully go places, if you like your black metal, check them out, and be sure to pick up this album when it comes out tomorrow!

Chaotic Black Metal - was soll man sich darunter vorstellen? Das Label (wahlweise die Musiker selbst) erfand(en) mal wieder eine klasse Stilbezeichnung, die sich allerdings auch im weiteren Sinne als Progressive Black Metal beschreiben lasst. Doch diese Unwichtigkeit fallt bei den Weissrussen "Infestum" direkt mal unter den Tisch!
Wie gesagt: Progressiv trifft hier nur im weiteren Sinne zu: Die Stucke sind zwar mit vielen Tempiwechseln, verschiedenen Riffs und anderen Finessen versehen, jedoch nie so wahnsinnig ausladend. Die ganze Chose ist eingangig und tiefgrundig zugleich: Eine sehr gute Mischung, die da aus der Anlage tont! Die Stimme von Sanger Ion the Saint klingt jedoch ein wenig gewohnungsbedurftig, ist sie doch sehr stark verzerrt. Andererseits tragt dies zum individuellen Stil der Band bei! Wenn man schon dabei ist: Die Texte sind grosstenteils auf russisch und beinhalten nicht in jedem Satz dreimal das Wort "Satan". Die weissrussischen Sangerknaben lassen neben den Keyboards (welche allerdings nie wirklich dominant sind) auch noch Elemente aus dem Electro einfliessen - so zum Beispiel gerne mal ein E-Drum. Dies verleiht den jeweiligen Titeln einen leichten Hauch von EBM - der Black Metal steht jedoch immer im Vordergrund. Eine Ausnahme gibt es doch: "Dark Passage" ist ein reines Instrumental. "Infestum" bewegen sich zum grossten Teil in schnelleren Gewassern, die Riffs sind astrein und es befindet sich kein Ausfall auf dem Silberling. Soweit erstmal alles schnieke! Mir personlich sagen ebenfalls die ofters auftauchenden, kurzen Chorpassagen zu, sie erzeugen eine fast sakrale Stimmung.
Grund zum Meckern gibt es trotzdem: Es will sich nicht so recht eine geniale Atmosphare aufbauen, so ganz vermag "Ta Natas" nicht den Horer die Welt um sich herum vergessen lassen. Dazu klingt einfach alles zu kopflastig und nicht "spontan" genug. Ausserdem wird die Stimme auch nicht jedem gefallen - gewohnungsbedurftig eben.
Zahlen wir also mal zusammen: "Ta Natas" ist ein sehr gutes, uberzeugendes Album, allerdings mit leichten Mangeln. Einigen wird es zu durchdacht und somit auch schwer zuganglich sein, andere werden genau dies schatzen. Der imaginare Trueness-Kodex greift hier auch nicht wirklich. Ist einfach ein Album, dass man lange horen kann, ohne, dass es langweilt. So muss es sein - nicht flach! Eine kleine progressive Perle, die es zu erfahren lohnt! Ubrigens befindet sich auf der Scheibe das Video zum Titelstuck, welches fur BM-Verhaltnisse recht professionell wirkt.

Regarding the band photo, I would say that INFESTUM want to come across modern and also the new album’s sound is clear and transparent. Despite of this appearance the Belarus musicians manage to interlace much of the old Black Metal spirit on Ta Natas, Thereby the four dark guys wearing sunglasses vary speed in convenient manner, some parts are made for training your neck curls. In nearly every song INFESTUM throttle tempo to avoid the danger of continuous mania. In the end pleasing tracks appear, but no sensational compositions. The instrumental aspect knows to please, but I blame the lead vocals for the just average overall view. The voice is alienated by exceeding effects, so that after the second song the performance steps on my nerves more and more. Despite that I have to admit that INFESTUM are able to write parts reminding of mighty Emperor. Sometimes the band catches the atmosphere of this Norwegian masters. Consequently some nice passages stay in my mind, the musicians care for alternation and riff through ten good songs. I Iike the whipping guitar chords like in the sheer exploding On Wings bribing with flowing measure changes. Unfortunately the voice supercharged by effects narrows my joy in listening anew. In addition I want to mention the unobtrusive keyboard positively clinging too gentle from time to time. Over and above I have to give some credit to the four-piece for the ability to play really without losing control at all. Despite that fact the slower parts have a more powerful effect contrasting the fast as an arrow element.
Actually there is nothing to complain about concerning Ta Natas; the hymns are missing and I hope that next time INFESTUM will trust their singer’s natural timbre without spicing it up far too artificially. Besides the exaggerated modern use of the drums should be partly diminished, then the guys will get more appreciation from my side.

Roel de Haan: Belarussians Infestum offer us their second full-length called 'Ta Natas'. These guys play mid-tempo black metal with rock infusions, some keyboards (not much though) and thrashy riffing. The songs aren't super complex nor very simple. We can hear some Norwegian stylistic elements throughout the riffs and melodies.
Overall is 'Ta Natas' quite enjoyable but doesn't feature truly memorable moments. To have this it needs a bit more edge and more originality, although I wouldn't call them copycats by any means. Infestum is clearly a talented band that can potentially be a very good one and I expect their next offering to be of high quality. But for now 'Ta Natas' isn't going to cut it in today's world of black metal.

Der aus Minsk stammende Vierer hat sich dem chaotischen Black Metal verschrieben und nach dem Intro "To the Master of Life" geht es so mit "Te Deum" auch gleich los; rasende Drums paaren sich mit scharf schneidenden Riffs und einer Stimme, die voller Hass und Aggression ruberkommt. Infestum bauen aber immer wieder ein paar schleppendere Parts mit ein. Beim folgenden "Masquerade" gehen die Minsker sogar eher etwas duster zu Werke und halten sich vornehmlich im Mid Tempo auf. Weiter im Text mit "Legion in Me", das mich wie "On Wings" ein wenig an Gorgoroth erinnert, wenn sie ihre Mid Tempo Kracher losgelassen haben. Richtig Vollgas gibt es wieder zu Beginn von "For Those Who...", das dann aber auch eher in die mittlere Gefielde wechselt und in dieser Art auch mit "I'll Close My Eyes" zu Beginn weitergefuhrt wird. Doch dann wird wieder herrlich gerast, was das Zeug halt, um dann wieder in druckvoll schleppende Parts zu wechseln. Mit druckender Bedrohung kriecht "Razor to Throat" aus den Boxen, das darauf folgende Instrumental "Dark Passage" macht seinem Namen Ehre, atmospharisch und bombastischer Key Sound kundigt viel Unheil an, das sich mit dem Titelsong entladen soll. Dieser ist mit uber sieben Minuten auch der langste und hier bauen Infestum auch mal Key Parts mit ein, um noch mehr zu drucken.
Wer gut durchdachten Black Metal horen will, sollte bei dieser Band ruhig mal ein Ohr riskieren.

Hm, das Label mit dem geilen Namen:""Blood Fire Death Production" ist mal wieder fleissig gewesen und prasentiert uns die wei?russische Band "Infestum". Weissrussland und Metal, warum nicht. BFd ist zumindestens davon uberzeugt, dass es klappen konnte und Infestum sowieso. Selber bezeichnen sie ihren Stil als " Chaotic Black Metal" und im Grunde ist damit alles gesagt. 10 mal geht es hier chaotisch zu Werke. Das Intro ist schon Chorelastig und lasst die Sache schon mal recht angehen. "Te Deum" zeigt uns dann, wohin die Reise geht. Ein wechselbad der Gefuhle. Mal lasst der Drummer die extrem schnelle Keule schwingen, mal begnugt er sich in Mid Tempo gefilden. Klingt alles sehr angenehme, das Riffing ist recht abwechslungsreich und die vorhandenen Melodien zunden ganz ordentlich. Nichts besonderes und auch nicht extrem chaotisch, aber fur Fans von "Dark Fortress" oder "Nagelfar" empfehlenswert. Irgendwie hat man das alles schonmal gehort, was ja nicht bedeutet, dass es automatisch schlecht sein muss. Die rasenden Passagen gefallen mit echt gut, der Drummer hat was auf dem Kasten, Blackies sollten definitiv mal reinhoren. Das obligatorische Video zur CD gibt es naturlich auch, man will ja nicht knausern,hehe. Ansonsten ist das Ding lecker aufgemacht und an der Produktion gibt es auch nichts zu meckern.

The album Ta Natas from the band Infestum is in melodic black metal style, although it sometimes sounds very psychedelic. Distorted but raw and thick vocals is the thing which adds the right atmosphere to the melodic tracks, which other bands miss, and which takes Infestum out of mediocrity. Moreover, combination of Russian language and this music makes uncanny dynamics.
What I consider not successful is the always same distortion of singer's voice. If Ion would have used different ways of distortion or other levels of voice, Ta Natas would sound more interestingly.
The cover of Ta Natas is well and creatively made and contains both English and Russian lyrics. There are deep thoughts of authors hidden in it.

Geil, weisse Russen. Schmecken gut. Und auch musikalisch haben die Ost-Europдer einiges vorzuweisen. Denn sie machen da weiter, wo Dimmu und Co. bereits vor einigen Jahren aufgehцrt haben (und sich fьr eine weitaus kommerziellere, weichere Gangart entschieden). Hier sind zwar auch Bombast-Black-Metal-Ansдtze zu finden, doch tummeln sich schmierige Keyboardfilme und pathetische Chцre weitestgehend im Hintergrund. Dafьr knьppeln die Herren schцn flott und fast ein wenig rьde durch die Prдrie, dazu kotzkreischt Ion The Saint hysterisch wie ein Backfisch einer Boygroup. Und die Gitarren schцn hoch und der Bass bloЯ nicht zu laut. Der Sound ist nicht sonderlich krдftig aber eben auch nicht voll Gьlle - und steht damit dem notwendigen Groove durchaus kooperativ gegenьber. Lange nix mehr wie "Stormblast" gehцrt? Naglfar sind zu perfekt? True-Blackies klingen zu wahr? Dann kцnnten INFESTUM was fьr Dich sein. Pluspunkte gibt’s fьr teilweise kyrillische Texte, von wegen Exotenbonus. Insgesamt mundet das Teil echt ganz gut, geile Melodien treffen auf ein gerьttelt MaЯ an Hдrte - okay, White Russian ist noch leckerer und origineller, aber immerhin.
